Trip Overview

Lhotse Expedition is one of the world’s highest peak expeditions in the Nepal Himalayas. Mt. LhoTse is located at the border of Tibet and Nepal at an elevation of 8,516m (27,940 ft). Lhotse means ‘South Peak’ because the mountain lies south of Everest and the name has been given by the Sherpas. Due to its location, Lhotse is by mistake sometimes identified as the south peak of the Everest massif – the mountain lies south to the Everest. The South Face of Lhotse is one of the largest mountain faces in the world and Mount Lhotse itself is ranked the fourth highest mountain in the world. But Lhotse is famous for its amazing and striking south face. The south face of Lhotse rises 3.2km within 2.25km horizontal distance making it the steepest face of this size in the world. It is a very difficult climb and has rarely been attempted and attempts have turned into fatalities. The western side of Lhotse is known as the Lhotse Face is the normal ascent route and it is a technically demanding route and involves solid climbing skills and experience. Mount Lhotse is often seen as a minor eight-thousander because Lhotse has one of the smallest topographic prominence values of any eight-thousander, as it rises only 610 m above the South Col. Lhotse is a stiff climb and has three summits: Lhotse Main 8516m, Lhotse Shar 8382m and Lhotse Middle or East 8410m. Lhotse Main was first climbed in 1956 by Ernst Reiss and Fritz Luchsinger who were part of a Swiss expedition. On December 5, 1979, Lhotse Shar was first climbed by Sepp Mayerl and Rolf Walter by taking the South-east-ridge. It was not until May 23, 2001 that Lhotse Middle was conquered by the Russian Expedition: Eugeny Vinogradsky, Serguei Timofeev, Alexei Bolotov and Petr Kuznetsov. There may be many difficulties including high altitudes, harsh weather conditions and even sheer exhaustion and the summit is very sharp with no place to sit down. The most risky part of climbing Mt. Lhotse is its Khumbu Icefall. However if you are a determined climber, there is no one stopping you and Mount Lhotse is one of the most beautiful mountains definitely worth climbing.
