Trip Overview

Mount Manaslu is located in the Mansiri Himal, in the west-central part of Nepal. Standing at 8,163m above sea level, Mt. Manaslu is the eighth highest mountain in the world. Manaslu means “mountain of the spirit”, derived from the Sanskrit word ‘Manasa’ which means “intellect” or “soul”. In Tibetan, Manaslu is known as Kutang where “tang” in Tibetan means a flat place. In 1950, Jimmy Roberts first discovered Mt. Manaslu to climb but Manaslu has always been a Japanese mountain for the reason that it was Toshio Imanishi and Gyalzen Norbu, members of a Japanese expedition who first climbed Mt. Manaslu on May 9, 1956. Besides Annapurna, Nanga Parbat and K2, Manaslu is measured as the 4th most dangerous 8,000 m peak therefore making it one of the most difficult peaks for climbers. This striking mountain has vertical surfaces, long ridges, rock and snow formation and glacier drainage. Manaslu offers numerous routes to mountaineers, there are six established routes to the top and among which the south face is considered the most difficult for climbing. The trail follows along the Budhi Gandaki River and on the way, there are ten peaks over 6,500m (21,300 ft) visible, including a few over 7,000m (23,000 ft). Some important peaks surrounding Manaslu include: Ngadi Chuli, Himalchuli and Baudha. A glacial saddle known as Larkya La, the highest point with an elevation of 5,106 metres (16,752 ft), lies north of Manaslu. The peak is surrounded on the east by the Ganesh Himal and the Buri Gandaki River gorge, on the west by the deep clefts of the Marysyangdi Khola with its Annapurna range of hills, to the south is the Gorkha town at the foot of the hill, which is an aerial distance of 48 kilometres (30 mi) to the peak. Manaslu Himal not only provides views of the snow-covered mountains of the Himalayas, since there are different ethnic groups who live in hill villages, you can get familiar with their culture and also have some close interaction with them. Here, one can find a blend of Tibetan and Nepalese culture. Manaslu has steep and sharp peaks and the landscape- area of about 642 sq miles- around is designated as the Manaslu Conservation Area for the purpose of preserving the cultural heritage and various valuable natural resources of the place and also to enhance the living standard of the local community by encouraging Eco tourism. Incomparable natural beauty, biological diversity and the rich cultural heritage are few things that define Mount Manaslu. Because of its different flora and fauna the landscape has breathtaking beauty. Adventure lovers will definitely love Mount Manaslu and its expedition will offer one of the most pleasant feelings. You will only require some fitness and mental preparedness and that will surely take you to the top. The best time to climb Mount Manaslu is on September and October
